The pan-Mediterranean digital campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UNEP/MAP follows its route also in 2026 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Barcelona Convention through a more and more rich constellation of events around the Mediterranean Sea

Today we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity established by the United Nations to draw attention to the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect it.

The 2026 campaign “Acting locally for global impact” highlights how achieving the objectives of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework depends above all on concrete actions at the local level.

Change happens in territories, through the joint work of institutions, local communities, businesses, and citizens.

For this reason, the Mediterranean represents a key area: it is one of the basins with the highest biodiversity in the world, but also among the most exposed to the impacts of climate change, pollution, and human pressure.
Here, the role of UNEP/MAP is essential: through coordination among countries, environmental monitoring, and support for regional policies, it helps translate global objectives into concrete actions for the protection of the Mediterranean.

Linking local actions to global objectives means strengthening the value of biodiversity for territories and for the communities that live in them.

Acting for the Mediterranean, for a global impact.
