The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), in collaboration with OceanCare and the UNEP/MAP programme, will organize a regional webinar on underwater noise on 29 May 2026.
The event aims to shed light on a growing environmental issue: the increase in human-generated underwater noise, particularly from commercial shipping, which is significantly affecting the marine environment. Many marine species rely on sound for communication, navigation, reproduction, and survival.
The webinar will explore the ecological impacts of underwater noise across the entire marine food web and present technical and operational measures to reduce its effects, as well as the use of new common indicators for monitoring underwater noise in the Mediterranean Sea.
