16th Edition of “Mediterraneo da remare #PlasticFree #NoLitter” . Launch event featuring a keynote speech by the Italian Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. Researchers, athletes, institutions, and civil society representatives will come together to discuss the 30×30 Target, with a focus on “coasts, seas, and islands to protect and restore.”
“Ensure and enable that by 2030 at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas, as well as marine and coastal areas—particularly those of special importance for biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services—are effectively conserved and managed through ecologically representative, well-connected, and equitably governed systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures. This should recognize indigenous and traditional territories, where applicable, and integrate them into broader landscapes, seascapes, and ocean environments, while ensuring that any sustainable use, where appropriate in such areas, is fully consistent with conservation outcomes, and that the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, including over their traditional territories, are recognized and respected.”
This is both a global political commitment and a European strategy that also refers to Target 2—restoring 30% of all degraded ecosystems—with some components already legally binding under the European Union’s Nature Restoration Regulation.
Against this backdrop, the 16th edition of the “Mediterraneo da remare #PlasticFree #NoLitter” campaign aims to foster new forms of cooperation among institutions, the research community, the sports sector, civil society, and businesses in order to achieve the goal of conserving and effectively managing 30% of Italy’s marine and coastal areas.
The event will also feature contributions from Tatjana Hema, Coordinator of UNEP/MAP’s Mediterranean Action Plan; Maria Alessandra Gallone, President of ISPRA and SNPA; and Silvestro Greco, Vice President of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station.
