On June 8, World Ocean Day 2026 is celebrated, an event that draws attention to the importance of protecting the largest ecosystem on the planet.
This year’s theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet,” places the strengthening of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at the center, as essential tools for conserving marine biodiversity, supporting coastal economies, and contributing to global climate stability.
Today, the challenge is not only about protecting the ocean at a global level, but also about safeguarding strategic and vulnerable seas such as the Mediterranean, where pollution, climate change, maritime traffic, and human pressure are putting unique ecosystems at risk.
The protection of 30% of land and oceans by 2030 is one of the most ambitious goals of international environmental governance. Achieving it requires cooperation between countries, effective monitoring tools, and the involvement of younger generations, who are increasingly becoming key actors in environmental policy.
The ocean produces more than half of the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate, and supports millions of people around the world.
Protecting it is not only an environmental issue: it is a strategic choice for our future.
