Today marks World Environment Day 2026, with the global event hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, and climate change at the center of international attention.
The planet is sending us signals.
Climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a reality already affecting ecosystems, cities, coastlines and communities around the world.
The Mediterranean Sea is considered one of the planet’s most vulnerable climate hotspots, facing rising sea temperatures, increasingly frequent extreme events and growing pressure on marine and coastal ecosystems.
Addressing these challenges requires cooperation, resilience and a truly sustainable blue economy. In this context, the role of UNEP/MAP remains essential in promoting the protection of the Mediterranean marine and coastal environment and strengthening regional cooperation for climate action.
“The planet is sending us signals.”
The response depends on the choices we make today.
