The pan-Mediterranean digital campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UNEP/MAP follows its route also in 2026 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Barcelona Convention through a more and more rich constellation of events around the Mediterranean Sea

Today, the Barcelona Convention turns 50 years old. On February 16, 1976, in Barcelona, the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution was signed, today known as the Barcelona Convention. Fifty years later, that signature still represents one of the foundational moments of international cooperation for the safeguarding of the Mediterranean.

Fifty years after Barcelona, the Convention continues to represent a pillar of environmental governance in the Mediterranean.
