This important event brings together the 22 Contracting Parties — the 21 Mediterranean coastal countries and the European Union — along with the main bodies and regional centres of the UNEP/MAP system, which coordinates the implementation of the Barcelona Convention. COP24 marks the 24th meeting of the Parties to the Convention, the international agreement for the protection of the marine and coastal environment of the Mediterranean, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Under the theme: “Mediterranean Blue Growth: Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Future” and in the framework of the UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP), COP24 aims to:
– Review progress in implementing the Barcelona Convention and the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development
– Adopt decisions to strengthen environmental governance and regional cooperation
– Accelerate actions to address marine pollution, biodiversity loss, climate change impacts, and sustainable blue economy
– Support countries in implementing national measures and meeting regional obligations
