Join us in the pan-Mediterranean digital campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNEP/MAP through a constellation of events around the Mediterranean Sea

Every year on 16 September, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer — a historic agreement signed forty years ago, when nations came together to protect the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

This global commitment led to the adoption of the Montreal Protocol, an environmental treaty that initiated the phase-out of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chemicals that were once commonly used in refrigeration systems, aerosol sprays, and foam products. Thanks to this collective action, the ozone layer is now on the path to recovery.
